Hello there! I’m excited to share this DIY Fairy Wings Tutorial that is easy, cute, and uses regular fabrics instead of nylons or tights! These make a great last minute Halloween costume, or are perfect for rainy day / snow day imagination play.
You can use scrap fabric or pick up some lightweight decorative tulle for this project. Feel free to substitute any supplies you need to. If you don’t feel comfortable using hot glue, you can use a tacky craft glue (with some patience!) or even stitch the fabric onto the frame. Let’s get started!

Start by pulling out the flat side of your hangers, and then pushing the center of the flat side back inwards to create a wing shape. Take the hook of the hangers and bend it down into itself as best you can. Grab a piece of duct tape, and arrange the two hooks together on the tape so they overlap.
Wrap the tape around to attach the two sides of the wings. Add more tape, wrapping until you have an even, secure center for your wings. Now take your fabric, and set it underneath one of the wings, with the right side of the fabric facing down. In small sections of a couple inches at a time, go ahead and put some hot glue on your hanger.
Pull the fabric around the wire, and hold it until the glue cools. Work around your hanger in small sections, doing the sections next to the center first. Then do the section opposite the center, pulling the fabric snugly.
Then continue working around the hanger, making sure to pull the fabric snug as you go. Droopy wings aren’t fun! When the whole wing is glued, trim off the excess fabric. Now grab your ribbon.

Place a bead of hot glue on your ribbon, and wrap it around the edge of the hanger, starting at one side of the center. Again, work in small sections all the way around.
When you get to the center, wrap the ribbon over the edge of the centerpiece, and glue it down onto the back. Now repeat these steps to make the other wing. Now let’s make these cute wings wearable! Grab your 1/2 inch elastic.
Then cut off a piece that’s approximately 20 inches. This size fits mosts kids, but you can always measure around the front of both arms to the middle of the back for an exact fit. Make sure the back side of your wings is facing up, and place the center of the elastic on the center of the wings. Then fold the two ends in to overlap like shown. Secure these in place with more duct tape.
To add a floral center to your wings, flip them over again so the right side is up. Trim the stem off your flower and separate the leaves and flower if they come apart easily. Put a big dot of hot glue in the center of the duct tape, and press your leaves into it. Let it cool, and then put a big dot of glue into the center of your leaves, and press your flower into it. I just love how it covers all the duct tape and makes the wings look so pretty. You can use one big flower or several smaller ones.
And here are your wings all done!
These DIY Fairy Wings are easy enough that older kids can make them themselves, and they fit kids from pre-K to middle school! I hope you have fun making a pair of your own, and remember to use your imagination! If you love fairies, make sure to check out our Fairy Coloring Pages.
