Winter Penguin Painting Project

The holidays are over, but it’s still winter. So, the days are cold and short, and maybe the kids are a little restless. This Winter Penguin Painting Project is perfect for kids of all ages! It’s a simple project that can be done on snow days, or cold nights inside.

This art project would be a great addition to a unit on the children’s book Mr. Popper’s Penguins!

Penguin Art Project Supplies:

  • Black construction paper.
  • White, orange, and black paint.
  • Paint brushes or q-tips.
  • Optional – pencil.

When my boys were younger I would cover our counter in butcher paper or Saran Wrap and just let them paint when I needed a few minutes of peace. If they were wound up or crabby, their moods were always so much better when they finished painting. And, I got adorable kid art work when they were done. Plus, clean up was a breeze when I covered the counters!

Let’s get started!

If you are working with younger kids, you can trace their foot onto the paper, just don’t trace their toes. This will be the penguin’s body. Or, you could just sketch out an oval shape at the bottom of the black construction paper.

Once the penguin’s body is sketched out, add some paint to a paper plate or palette. You will need a lot of white, but only a very small amount of orange and black paint.

Now, use dip a q-tip or paint brush tip in the white paint and add snow around the penguin body. Be sure to add a lot of snow around the penguin’s body so it stands out on the black paper. Then, use a little more white paint and paint the penguin’s belly and eyes.

Next, paint a small orange beak on the penguin under the white eyes.

Finally, add small black dots over the white eyes.

That’s it! I hope this simple little winter penguin painting project has inspired you to create your very own foot print penguins!
