Recycled Object Robot Craft

Hello everyone! When you have kids, you go through A LOT of groceries. I’m seriously amazed at the amount of boxes and cartons that go into our recycling each month, and we try and reuse them as much as we can. Today I’m sharing this awesome Recycled Object Robot Craft that is a perfect way to use up some of that packaging and give it a new purpose!

You don’t have to use the exact boxes and supplies that I’m using, just use what you have! A cereal box and cut up plastic cookie separators would work great, so just use your imagination. You can also use markers, spray paint, and craft glue. I’m a big fan of working with what you have sitting around. Let’s get started!

Recycle some egg cartons into flowers while you’re building your robot!

Supplies:

  • Medium sized box
  • Egg carton
  • Pipe cleaners in various colors
  • Googly eyes
  • Paints in multiple colors (craft acrylic is best)
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun

Start by carefully cutting 4 sections from your egg carton that are 1 1/2 egg cups long. I’m not quite sure what the exact name for the little pockets the eggs go in is, so we’re calling them egg cups. Also cut off half of the top of the egg carton to make the head. Put glue on the edge of your egg cups, and attach them to the sides and bottom front of the box to make arms and legs for your robot. Make sure the top of the box will stay closed. If not, add some glue to keep it closed.

Now put glue on the edge of the head, and place it on top of the box. See the robot coming to life? You can use your extra egg cups to hold paint, and paint your whole robot! I started by using tempera paint, and it doesn’t stick well to the styrofoam, so make sure to use an acrylic based craft paint.

Yellow paint is often translucent, so I ended up painting the robot head a bright silver to cover up the labeling on the package. Let your robot dry completely, for a couple of hours if you’re using any plastic or styrofoam parts. To make a smile, fold a pipe cleaner in half.

Twist the ends together and shape it, and then glue it onto your robot’s head. Now glue on as many googly eyes as your robot would like! Mine likes to have really good peripheral vision, so he has eyes on the side of his head too!

Now to add some sensor antennas to your robot, cut a bunch of pipe cleaners in half. Then twirl them around your finger to make them swirly.

If you used styrofoam for the head, you can just poke them right in! If not, you can glue them in place.Recycled Object Robot Craft

He has swirly antennas all over his head!

And, a sensor across his feet to make sure he doesn’t run into anything while walking around the house!

This robot is all done, but feel free to add whatever you’d like to personalize you robot! I hope you all enjoyed learning how to make this Recycled Object Robot Craft with me!
