Living in Florida, it is summer weather about 75% of the year. So, we almost always have water guns for the kids to play with! And, when the boys were younger, they would spend most of the day outside playing. Some days I gave them chalk or ice paint to be creative with. But they always loved the water gun paint project days! This process art painting project is just as fun to do as it is a cool art project!

Backyard Summer Paint Project Supplies:
- Water guns.
- Paint.
- Water.
- Poster board or other large piece of paper or canvas.
- Tape.
- Optional – liquid soap.
This water gun paint project was, hands down, my boys’ favorite summer activity! They even enjoyed painting again for this post. And, we almost always had everything we needed for the kids to be creative. And, even if you don’t all of the supplies are very affordable and most of it can be reused! I spent less than $5 for everything. This fun project is great for kids of all ages.
First, dilute some paint with water. You want it to be thin, but not too thin. I mixed it about 1/3 paint to 2/3 water. I added liquid soap to the paint solution too. This helped keep the paint from staining the kids’ clothes.
Next, fill the water guns with paint solution. We matched the paint colors to the water gun colors.

Now, tape the poster board or paper onto the fence or a wall. You may want to hang a plastic shower curtain on the wall before you tape the poster board up to protect the surface. We always painted on our PVC fence and just hosed it off when we finished painting.
Finally, join the kids and paint with water guns.
You could do something similar with clothing dye and t-shirts too! The boys didn’t enjoy painting shirts as much as they did the paper (and each other).
That’s it! I hope this inspired you to get creative and create a fun water gun paint project with the kids this summer!
