Pipe Cleaner Rainbow Craft

St. Patrick’s Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. When I was a little girl, my Mimi always named her pets Irish names, we had four leaf clovers, and she would tell us about her trip to Ireland. I have learned as an adult that my Irish heritage isn’t as deep as we thought on her side of the family, but I still love stories about my Irish roots. Last year we were going to check off a huge item on my bucket list and watch the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Chicago. I was beyond excited, and even more disappointed to have to cancel that trip last minute. But, we still celebrated St. Paddy’s Day at home and this fun pipe cleaner rainbow craft is perfect for at home or in class celebrations!

Rainbow Project Supplies:

  • Red, orange, yellow, green, and purple pipe cleaners.
  • Scissors.
  • School glue.
  • White craft paint and paint brush.
  • Shaving cream.
  • White cardstock paper.

Rainbows are always so awe-inspiring to me. I just feel so blessed to be able to see such beauty in the sky. And this little craft is a great way to teach little ones about rainbows and colors. You can even include the ROY G BIV color order; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. This color order has stuck with me for decades!

Let’s get started on this fun St. Patrick’s Day craft!

First, gather your supplies. We didn’t have all of the colors of the rainbow, but we used what we had.

Next, bend the pipe cleaners into a semi-circle. Then, glue them onto the cardstock using the ROY G BIV color order. You may have to hold them in place while the glue dries, or place a sheet of wax paper and a heavy book on the pipe cleaner while it dries.

Once the pipe cleaners are secure on the paper you can begin adding the fluffy clouds. I did snip the small excess pieces of pipe cleaner off the rainbow with scissors before we added the clouds. To make the clouds, mix a little bit of white paint with shaving cream. Then, use a paint brush to paint the clouds on the ends of the rainbow!

That’s it! I hope this fun pipe cleaner rainbow craft project has inspired you to create your own and celebrate St. Paddy’s Day!
