Spring is in the air. The birds are chirping and making their nests to prepare for the arrival of their spring babies. This is one of my favorite times of the year. We have a beautiful gardenia tree in our front yard, and the birds build nests in it every year. It’s so fun to hear the baby mocking birds chirp and watch them grow. My boys and niece and nephew loved to use grass clippings to make their own nests like the birds in the tree when they were younger. But, this paper plate bird’s nest craft is a little less messy and probably a better project for classrooms.
Paper Plate Bird’s Nest Craft
Here’s another birds nest craft for slight older kids ages 6-8.
Paper Nest Project Supplies:
- Paper plate.
- Scissors.
- School glue.
- Sharpie marker.
- Brown and yellow construction paper.
- Optional – googley eyes, paper shreds, and or plastic eggs.
Let’s get started! This is a great project for little ones to work on developing fine motor skills. I like to have all of my supplies ready before I start on a any project, especially crafting and building projects.
Once you have your paper plate bird’s nest supplies, you can start cutting the brown construction paper into strips. This was a time consuming project, but it is great for kids that need to work on scissor skills.

Next, cut out two yellow oval shapes, and two wings for each oval shape.
Finally, you can start assembling the nest! Add a line of school glue to a strip of brown paper and place it on the paper plate. Repeat this step until the plate is covered with brown construction paper “twigs”. There is no right way to do this, just cover the plate with the paper. You can also add paper shreds if you want.
Now, glue the wings onto the yellow oval shapes. You can draw eyes, or glue on googly eyes. Then, fold a small section of the bottom of the oval. This will create a flap. You can use this flap to glue the birds in the nest. You can also glue some plastic eggs in the nest.
That’s it! I hope this cute paper plate bird’s nest craft has inspired you to create your own spring craft!
