Mae Jemison’s Space Shuttle – A Black History Month Craft

Let’s learn how to make Mae Jemison’s Space Shuttle! This Black History Month craft is near and dear to my heart, I grew up on the East Coast of Florida. I can vividly remember the very first shuttle launch, and each time I saw a launch, I got goosebumps. So, I was thrilled to take this opportunity to teach my niece about Astronaut Mae Jemison and other important black women that helped shape NASA! We love meaningful projects that teach important lessons. Let’s get started!

Mae Jemison’s Space Shuttle Black History Month Craft

Supplies:

• 1 sheet of blue or black construction paper.
• 1/2 Sheet of white, and scraps of black, red, orange, and yellow construction paper. 
• Glue Stick or School Glue. 
• Scissors.
• Red, white, and blue crayons.

This project was so easy and fun to make. begin by folding the white paper in half lengthwise and drawing a light outline of the shuttle on it. Cut it out, and set it aside.

Then, use the scraps of black paper to cut out the shuttle’s rockets. You will need to cut three out in a rounded edge trapezoid shape. The bottom should be slightly wider than the top. Now, cut out flames for each rocket with the scraps of red, orange, and yellow paper.

Next, add a little glue to the shuttle and glue it on the black or blue piece of construction paper. Then, add a little bit of glue to each rocket and carefully glue the tops just slightly on the shuttle. Finally, add the flames on the bottom of each rocket. We layered our flames to give them a little more dimension.

Now, use the red and blue crayons to add a small American flag to the shuttle.

Then, use the white crayon to add stars, moons, and planets in space around the shuttle.
