Harry Potter Printable Crafts: Shadow Puppets

We are huuuuuuuge Harry Potter fans around here (who isn’t?!). And since it’s the Potter-ish month of July, we’re sharing this brand new set of Harry Potter printable crafts: shadow puppets! (Harry’s birthday is July 31, for those of you who aren’t fanatics about the books’ trivia). Our Jr. Art Director Lilia drew these (she’s SO talented!!), and we had so much fun coming up with ideas of which things to feature. There’s an assortment of the leading characters, some ‘stage props’ and some scenery / settings from the books. We’ve included the Hogwarts Express, Hogwarts castle, and the fabulous flying car from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Harry, Hermoine and Ron are included, of course, along with Voldemort, Snape, Draco Malfoy and the ever lovable Professor Dumbledore. Several animals from the magical world are also included, such as Hedwig, Nagini, and Fawkes. Two of the animagus from the book are here as well: Padfoot (Sirius Black) and Wormtail (Peter Pettigrew).

How to Make these Harry Potter Shadow Puppets

These shadow puppet printable crafts are very easy to make. All you need are some card stock to print the puppets, good scissors, coffee stirrers or popsicle sticks and a razor blade (for older children). The razor is needed to remove the inner pieces from items such as the castle windows or train windows. If younger children are doing this project, we recommend an adult or teenager help with this part of the cutting. Coffee stirrers are the best thing to use to hold up the puppets. You can simply tape the stirrers to the back of the puppets.

Once assembled, let your imagination go wild! You can use a spotlight or work light behind a sheet to cast the shadows. Remember, though, that the puppets will need to be close to the ‘screen’ to show up clearly. Alternatively you can simply use these printables as puppets without the need to cast shadows.
