Supplies:
- Coffee filters
- Clothespins
- Crayola washable markers in dark colors
- Black paint
- Silver or white gel pen or paint
- Scissors
- Small paintbrush
- Spray bottle filled with water
- Surface to work on. I recommend a cookie sheet or aluminum foil, as this gets messy
- Optional: a hairdryer is helpful if you’re trying to finish these quickly
Start by painting your clothespins with the black paint. While they’re drying, let’s work on the colorful bat wings. You’ll need one coffee filter per bat. Take each filter and fold it in half, and set it down on your work surface. Now you’re going to take your markers and completely color the top side of the coffee filter.
You can color in all different kinds of patterns. I just did stripes and blobs here, but the only limit is your imagination. Keep in mind, the more black marker you add in, the dark your wings will end up looking. When they’re all colored in, take your spray bottle and spray the filters until they’re completely damp and the colors have started to blend together. Now you can either let them air dry over night, or you can use a hair dryer on the low setting to dry the filters in just a couple minutes. Remember that the filters are very light, so make sure to point the dryer straight down or hold them in place so they don’t fly away!

When the filter is dry, fold it in half. Then you’re going to use your scissors to cut little round half circle shapes into the edge of the filter.
Open the filter back up. See how much it’s starting to look like a bat wing? By now your clothes pins should be dry. Take your gel pen or paint and draw a little face on the clip end of the clothes pin. Next you’re going to gather up and pinch the wing in the middle.
Open up the clothes pin and slip the wing into the clip. Close it, and then adjust the wings until you’re happy with how they look.
You’re all done! I hope you had fun learning how to make this Coffee Filter Bat Craft with me today. Check out this toilet paper roll haunted houses craft for kids for another cute Halloween kids craft!
